There’s been a lot of discussion in the media lately that Britney Spears is suffering from a psoriasis flare up. She’s the latest in a line of celebrities that have discovered and revealed that they are living with the skin disease. Britney joins the likes of Kim Kardashian, LeAnn Rimes, Stacy London, CariDee English and me. Okay, obviously not me, but I’m pretty sure I would totally rock the red carpet if given the opportunity!
Like them or not, their careers require them to be in front of the camera and to always be looking their best. They’re all gorgeous woman, but it’s extremely difficult for anyone with psoriasis to feel their absolute best with a flare up. But at least for most of us, it doesn’t make it into the news and headlines. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to have something that makes me feel so insecure at times broadcasted, usually as an imperfection for all to judge and discuss.
The good thing about all of the publicity is that it’s bringing psoriasis into the headlines and there is becoming mainstream awareness about it. The majority of the articles and news clips that I’ve been exposed to, do provide an explanation about what psoriasis is. So inadvertently these celebrities are helping to spread awareness about psoriasis. A few times recently when I’ve told people that I have psoriasis, I’ve had them say “Oh isn’t that what Kim Kardashian has?” But the awareness isn’t only inadvertent; they’ve also been brave enough to stand up and publicly discuss their struggles and become advocates for research and spreading awareness. Thanks ladies!!
